SELF-CARE FOR CARERS

‘While caring for a partner can be very rewarding, it can also place a strain on relationships,’ says Carers UK’s Emily Holzhausen. More than 75% of carers responding to the charity’s State of Caring survey said they felt stressed and anxious; 69% found it difficult to get a good night’s sleep and 50% felt lonely. ‘Many carers find it difficult to prioritise their own wellbeing,’ says Emily. ‘Whether you’re noticing a change in your partner’s behaviour caused by an illness or condition, or feeling grief at a loss of communication, intimacy or shared lifestyle, it’s important to find a way to ensure your own needs and emotions are not neglected. Opening up about the way you feel – sharing with family and friends, joining a carer’s group or contacting our Carers UK helpline for further advice – can be hugely beneficial to support you in your caring role.’ Find out more at carersuk.
